Getting Sick

What happens when we get sick? What happens when the cure is almost worse than the disease?

This is a story about the commonly-prescribed drug, Prednisone. In the United States, over a million people take this steroid to treat a wide variety of illnesses. This piece explores how and why this drug works, and the history of how it came to be developed.

It’s also the story of one family’s journey, and what they did when their young daughter got sick.

I produced this feature for the podcast, Distillations.

Listen: Prednisone

  2. What a great cast! People don’t understand that these kids have to be on these meds that are so bad for them. People don’t realize that Prednisone causes brittle bones, cataracts, Cushing’s Disease. They don’t realize that kids with JRA are stuck taking medicines like steroids that can hurt them, or that it’s practically the only treatment for JDM kids. (Then again, most of these people have never even heard of either one!) I appreciate ANY effort that I see to raise awareness. I applaud you for putting this together so well. And your little one sounds adorable! I hope that she’s feeling much better by now.
